Inflation declines again

Inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) (2006/07=100), which is compiled by the Department of Census and Statistics, declined to -0.3% in September 2015, compared to -0.2% recorded in the previous month, on a year-on-year basis. Annual average inflation declined to 0.7% in September 2015 from 1.0% in August 2015.

CCPI decreased by 0.3% from August to September 2015. The monthly decrease in CCPI was mainly caused by the decline in prices of items in the Food category. Prices of some varieties of vegetables, green chillies, fresh fish, eggs, rice, red onions, coconut oil and coconuts decreased during September 2015.

However, prices of chicken, beef, dried fish, Maldive fish, some varieties of fruits, big onions, limes and sugar increased during the month. Within the Non-Food category, prices in the Clothing and Footwear; Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance; and Recreation and Culture subcategories increased. All the other subcategories, namely Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels; Health; Transport; Communication; Education and Miscellaneous Goods and Services remained unchanged during the month.
