President Maithripala Sirisena with US President Barak Obama both made history in their separate ways last week with Obama becoming the first sitting US President to visit Hiroshima where the US on 6 August 1945 dropped the first ever atomic bomb killing nearly 100,000 people, and Sirisena became the first Lankan leader to be invited to a G7 Summit. Successive US presidents had avoided visiting Hiroshima for 71 years. During his speech in Hiroshima, Obama recalled: “71 years ago on a bright morning, death fell from the sky and the world was changed.” Sirisena in his address recalled the “revolutionary change of government” in Sri Lanka via two elections in 2015 and the positive democratic and economic developments since then.
