The Ministry of Petroleum Industry says that measures are now underway to import an urgent stock of 340,000 metric tonnes of diesel to generate electricity.

The imported diesel is to be given to the Ministry of Power and Energy to be used for the generation of thermal power.

The Ministry of Petroleum Industry says that around US$ 350 million will be needed to import the urgent stock of diesel as the stocks of diesel available in the stores have already been diverted to the Ceylon Electricity Board to generate thermal power.

The stocks of naphtha that were to be exported were also being given to the Ceylon Electricity Board, sources further said.
