Govt in rapid-fire changes to Constitution: Ajith

The rapid fire changes to the Sri Lankan Constitution, soon to be amended for the 19th time with no consultation with stakeholders whatsoever, indicates that the Government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has no respect for the supreme law of the land, UNP MP Ajith Perera told a news conference yesterday.

Perera said that the Government believes it can meddle with the Constitution to achieve its ends and does not even believe these monumental changes to the country’s founding laws require consultation and discussion even with its own constituent allies.

“The Government should remember it is changing the Constitution with a stolen two-thirds majority that the people never gave them,” he charged.

Perera said that it was hoped that the UPFA’s constituents, many of whom now regret voting to enact the 18th Amendment that extended presidential power and removed presidential term limits, would think twice before allowing this latest constitutional amendment to pass.
