REUTERS: Sri Lankan stocks rose to a more than five-week high on Friday as investors bought blue-chips like John Keells Holding PLC, but negative retail sentiment due to the US shutdown hit turnover, brokers said. The main share index rose 0.4%, or 23.15 points, to close at 5,837.95, its highest since 27 August. Shares in conglomerate John Keells Holding PLC rose 1.26% to Rs. 216.50 while market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC rose 1.35% to Rs. 1,054 in thin trade. Foreign investors were net sellers on Friday for the first time in 12 sessions. They sold Rs. 27.5 million ($ 209,200) worth of shares. They have been net buyers of Rs. 20.46 billion this year. The day’s turnover was Rs. 622.2 million, well below this year’s daily average of about Rs. 877 million.
