The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) will grant permission to phone companies to setup Wi-Fi zones in the country, TRC Director General Anusha Palpita said.
Well known as ‘Wi-Fi,’ wireless fidelity enables data transfer via wireless network connections.Accordingly, Wi-Fi zones will be set up in populated areas including the coastal belt (beaches) where more tourists mingle, areas covering public offices, bus stands and railway stations.
Preliminary measures of implementing Wi-Fi zones are now undertaken by phone companies that were granted permission, the Director said.
Wi-Fi zones will be set island wide under several stages and this task expected to be completed by the end of 2011, he added.
