Not to be outdone by the antics of her presidential successor, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga threw her hat into the ring yesterday, vowing to contest in the 17 August parliamentary poll as the SLFP prime ministerial candidate.

Private Secretary to Kumaratunga, P. Dissanayake issuing a statement, said the former President would contest from the SLFP or the UPFA from the Gampaha District.

“People are strongly urging her to contest as the party’s PM candidate,” Dissanayake said.

He said she had not accepted that request so far because she had always maintained she had retired from politics.

“But if defeated presidents from the party were staking a claim, as an undefeated leader of the country, she has the right to request the party for the same nomination,” Kumaratunga’s aide said.

“She has every right to contest, this is the party her father created, therefore she will definitely contest,” he added.
