Banks’ Association responds to Chandra J over customer account secrecy

The Sri Lanka Banks’ Association (SLBA) has responded to good governance activist Chandra Jayaratne’s open letter raising concerns over the violation of customer account secrecy in connection with the motion to impeach the Chief Justice.

Jayaratne also raised purported violations of expected standards of best practice and corporate governance by members of SLBA last week.

“The Sri Lanka Banks’ Association (Guarantee) Limited is a company limited by guarantee which has been incorporated under the Companies Act No. 17 of 1982. It has no power whatsoever to inquire into the affairs of its members or to impose disciplinary sanctions on its members. In the event of a member failing in any of its duties or obligations towards its customer, it is for the respective member and the customer to address and resolve such issue,” SLBA Secretary General Upali de Silva said in his response to Jayaratne and copied to the media.
