Postal workers have initiated a token strike opposing the proposed conversion of the Nuwara Eliya Post Office into a hotel.

Separately Sri Lanka Post announced that all postal workers will be denied leave from 8, 9 and 10 November.

In a statement, Postmaster General R.P. Sathkumara acknowledged informing the President’s Secretary of their willingness to hand over the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to allow a more effective investment opportunity, according to Government policy.

Adding that no Post Office owned by the Department of Posts will be closed, he said the UDA will in turn provide a suitable building to run the Nuwara Eliya Post Office.

The Postmaster General also said the possibility of a Postal workers strike was discussed with the Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardana and Ministry Secretary Anusha Palpita on Tuesday.
