WindForce PLC yesterday announced that it has received Letters of Award for 12 standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects under Sri Lanka’s first grid-scale standalone BESS program launched by the Ceylon Electricity Board.
The awards, received following international competitive bidding, cover projects with a combined installed capacity of 120 MW/480 MWh. The facilities will be developed under the Build, Own and Operate model with a 15-year contract period.
The total investment for the 12 projects amounts to Rs. 20.79 billion. Project financing is expected to follow an 80:20 debt-to-equity structure.
Each project will have a capacity of 10 MW/40 MWh. The substations identified for development are Ampara, Old Anuradhapura, Beliatta, Chunakkam, Hambantota, Kilinochchi, Mahiyanganaya, Maho, Polonnaruwa, Valachchenai, and Vavuniya, where WindForce will hold a 100% stake. The 12th project at Vavunathivu will also have a capacity of 10 MW/40 MWh and will be developed through a consortium in which WindForce PLC will hold a 50% stake alongside Vidullanka PLC.
The program marks Sri Lanka’s first standalone battery storage initiative aimed at strengthening grid stability and enabling higher integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
WindForce said further disclosures will be made as material developments arise.
