President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday inaugurated the first grid-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility developed by WindForce PLC and Vidullanka PLC, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition.
The 10 MW/40 MWh BESS facility in Anuradhapura is the first of 13 facilities being developed through StoreX Ltd. WindForce and Vidullanka secured 13 of the 16 projects awarded nationwide through international competitive bidding under Sri Lanka’s first grid-scale standalone BESS program.
Together, the facilities will provide 130 MW/520 MWh of storage capacity, with the remaining 12 to be commissioned progressively.
Developed under a 15-year Build, Own and Operate framework, the facilities will store surplus electricity during periods of high renewable generation and discharge it during peak evening and night-time demand, supporting greater renewable energy integration and grid stability
President Dissanayake also inaugurated Sri Lanka’s largest floating solar power plant, a 5 MW facility developed by Diyajanani Ltd., and fully owned by WindForce.
The plant is expected to generate approximately 9 GWh annually, equivalent to the annual electricity requirements of around 10,000 households, while avoiding an estimated 6,400 tonnes of CO₂emissions annually.
The project created approximately 150 employment opportunities during construction and 12 permanent positions. With the commissioning of these plants, WindForce’s total renewable energy generation capacity increases to approximately 268 MW.
Together, the two projects represent an important step towards a more flexible, resilient and sustainable electricity system for Sri Lanka.
