The United States has updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka, urging citizens to exercise increased caution due to the risk of civil unrest, potential terrorist activity, and the presence of landmines in parts of the country.
The US Department of State said protests linked to Sri Lanka’s political and economic situation may occur without warning and could turn violent. It noted that police have previously used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.
The advisory also warned of possible terrorist attacks targeting public spaces such as hotels, transport hubs, Government offices, markets, and places of worship, citing past incidents that occurred with little or no notice.
In addition, travellers were cautioned about unexploded landmines remaining from the civil war, particularly in northern districts of the Northern Province, where some areas are still considered hazardous despite extensive demining efforts.
The US Government said its ability to provide emergency services is limited in remote areas and advised travellers to avoid demonstrations, remain alert in crowded places, and stay on well-used roads. Americans visiting Sri Lanka were also encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP) for security updates and to ensure emergency contact with the US Embassy if needed.
