The United National Party (UNP) said yesterday it will support the No Confidence Motion (NCM) against the President which is being mooted by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M.A. Sumanthiran.

“It is important that the Parliament conveys the lack of confidence in the President that the public has demonstrated,” the UNP said on its official Twitter handle.

TNA MP Sumanthiran said an impeachment motion against the President will take longer than a year and hence a NCM is being prepared.

“We can start that process also like the abolition of Executive Presidency through 21A. We must try everything. No Confidence Motion (NCM) against the President has a tremendous moral force for him to step down and requires only a simple majority,” he said on Twitter last evening.

The NCM against the President is being drafted under Article 43 of the Constitution.
