Tourist arrivals top 1.4 m mark

Sri Lanka Tourism has surpassed the 1.4 million tourist arrivals milestone so far for this year, with the Kandy Esala Perahera being one of the highlights of the early August footfall surge.

With 40,047 visitors registered in the first five days of August, the total arrivals for the year so far reached over 1.4 million (1,408,335).

For August, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) forecasts 249,019 visitors. However, the country failed to achieve the set monthly targets for the past seven months.

Year-to-date (YTD) data shows India leads the pack with 286,085 tourists, followed by the UK with 135,722 travellers, while Russia has contributed 116,257 visitors so far this year.

Sri Lanka needs to draw over 1.59 million more tourists in the remaining months of the year to achieve the 3 million target.
