Tea exports in July hit new high in volume, value

A tea export quantity of 24 million kilos (Mnkg) in July this year was up 13% from last year’s figure of 21.3 Mnkg. 

The July figure is also the highest monthly quantity shipped in the past 42 months, dating back to December 2021, said Siyaka Research analysing Customs data. 

Tea exports for the period January-July have reached 150 Mnkg, 7% more than last year’s figure of 140.4 Mnkg, and is the best seven-month performance since 2021.

The country also earned the highest-ever value of Rs. 263 billion, which converts to an approximate US dollar value of $ 884 million. This makes the average FOB value per kilogram for all teas shipped during the period January-July 2025 to be a highest-ever US dollar value of $ 5.87 per kg. 

Exports of tea in Value-Added form are also at a six-year high of 58% and well above last year’s figure of 53%. A sharp increase of quantities exported to Libya from 3.77 Mnkg to 13 Mnkg has contributed to the performance. Iraq remains the top destination with a quantity of 22.3 Mnkg and Russia comes in third, equalling Libya’s 13 Mnkg. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) follows at 10.6 Mnkg, whilst Turkey makes up the top five destinations with imports of 10.3 Mnkg.
