DesignOne’s Avinya Academy School in Bandaragama has received global recognition for its architectural designs, being awarded with an honourable mention at the prestigious Architecture MasterPrize 2023.

The award ceremony will take place on 18 November 2024, at the renowned Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Despite the challenging economic conditions and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka, the Avinya Academy has emerged as a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience. Built within a record time of 100 days, using only locally-sourced materials due to import restrictions at the time, the project overcame numerous obstacles to become a shining example of design excellence.

The Avinya Academy not only provides underprivileged students with a creative and engaging learning environment but also serves as a source of inspiration for all those involved. The project stands as a testament to the power of design to bring solace and optimism during dark times.

The innovative design of the school reimagines traditional educational architecture by breaking down the walls of rectilinear classrooms and replacing them with open elliptical learning pavilions set amidst a serene garden. By connecting students with nature, encouraging reflection, and fostering creativity, the Avinya Academy transforms spaces for learning.

Lead Architect Dan Ameresekere, the design visionary behind the Avinya Academy, expressed his gratitude for the global recognition received amidst the challenging economic times in Sri Lanka.

“To be recognised globally for Design Excellence in such trying economic calamity in Sri Lanka makes this award extra special and meaningful. As we looked at nature for inspiration for this design, we give glory, honour and praise to the intelligent hand behind nature, the Creator God for the privilege of being able to make creative contributions through DesignOne for Avinya Foundation,” Ameresekere said.
