Sri Lanka to sign MoU with National University of Singapore for AI collaboration

The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Digital Economy Ministry and the National University of Singapore (NUS), paving the way for strategic collaboration in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The proposed partnership follows discussions with ‘The Program on Artificial Intelligence in Singapore’ (AI Singapore), which is implemented at the National University of Singapore, to explore the opportunities for active partnership and sharing knowledge that can be contributable to the strategic objectives in Sri Lanka for the development of Artificial Intelligence.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said discussions have been conducted and the collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s national digital strategy and the development of its AI ecosystem.

“Under the MoU, both parties will initiate joint research on AI technologies, conduct training and capacity-building programs, and promote mutual cooperation in addressing emerging local and global challenges through AI solutions,” he added.

This initiative is seen as a key step in aligning Sri Lanka with global advancements in digital innovation and positioning the country as a regional player in AI development.

Dr. Jayatissa highlighted that formalisation of this partnership will support Sri Lanka’s long-term goals of digital transformation, economic resilience and inclusive technological growth.

The proposal to this effect submitted by President Anura Kumara Disanayake in his capacity as the Digital Economy Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
