The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a financial grant agreement with the European Union (EU) to secure € 8 million for the implementation of the ‘Agri-Green Initiatives for Green Economic Growth through Sustainable Agricultural Initiatives’ project.
The joint proposal, prepared by the Plantation and Community Infrastructure Facilities Ministry, the Department of Rubber Development, and the Rubber Research Institute, aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices across Sri Lanka’s rubber-growing regions, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern, Southern, Central, and North-Central Provinces.
The EU has appointed the German International Cooperation (GIZ) as the main implementing authority for the project.
The initiative seeks to support the country’s transition toward a green economy by encouraging sustainable consumption and production practices, strengthening food security, and fostering environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
Special focus will be given to engaging youth and women within selected production chains to drive inclusive and sustainable growth.
The proposal to this effect was presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as the Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister.
