Sri Lanka gets high ranking in global startup ecosystem report

  • Identified among Top 5 Global Ecosystem and second best in Asian Ecosystem in Affordable Talent in Startup Genome 2022 Global Startup Ecosystem Report
  • Sri Lanka created $ 228 m in Ecosystem Value from 1 July 2019 to 31 Dec. 2021

Reinforcing recent strides and future potential Sri Lanka has been highly ranked in the latest influential global start-up ecosystem report released yesterday.

The 2022 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome launched at the London Tech Week, is the world’s most comprehensive, data-driven research on start-ups with over 280 entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems and three million start-ups analysed. 

The Report includes a ranking of the leading 140 ecosystems, continental insights, and founder-focused articles from thought-leading experts.

Sri Lanka’s rankings include as among the Top 5 Global Ecosystem and No. 2 Asian Ecosystem in Affordable Talent — measures the ability to hire tech talent.

Other rankings are Top 25 Asian Emerging Ecosystem in Funding — measures innovation through early-stage funding and investor’s activity; Top 30 Asian Emerging Ecosystem in Talent and Experience — measures long term trends over the most significant performance factors and the ability to generate and keep talent in the ecosystem; Top 30 Asian Emerging Ecosystem in Performance — measures the size and performance of an ecosystem based on the accumulated tech start-up value created from exits and funding and Sri Lanka placed #2 (after Thailand) in Club Med’s worldwide ranking of countries for Digital Nomads in 2021.

The report also states that Sri Lanka created $ 228 million in Ecosystem Value from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2021.

It cited tax incentives and a start-up-friendly environment as reasons a start-up should move to Sri Lanka. Additionally, the passing of Personal Data Protection Bill to ensure accountability for citizen data privacy and protection and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to plan to develop a Farmer Data Management Systems and Digital Strategy were also emphasised.

Among other highlights are the Agtech and New Food and Cleantech sectors are highlighted for their density of talent, support resources, and start-up activity and Nomad4LK digital nomad ambassador competition was held at the AsiaBerlin Summit 2021 in Germany. The report also acknowledged Hatch being awarded the Best Co-Working Space at the Global Startup Awards in November 2021.

The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) worked in concert with Startup Genome to showcase Sri Lanka’s entrepreneurial ecosystem in the #GSER2022 -

 “Sri Lanka’s Startup Development Strategy boasts of start-up-friendly policies, non-collateral-based debt finance, and the development of state-of-the-art technology parks, to name a few initiatives in our holistic approach to develop the start-up ecosystem and establish Sri Lanka as a hub for new technology,” ICTA Chairman Jayantha De Silva said.
