Sri Lanka and China reaffirm commitment to deepening strategic cooperation

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath on Saturday met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings in Kuala Lumpur.

The discussions reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and strategic cooperative partnership between Sri Lanka and China.

During the meeting, Minister Herath reiterated Sri Lanka’s deep appreciation for China’s unwavering support to Sri Lanka in times of need, particularly its assistance in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and its timely cooperation during recent economic challenges.

Minister Herath highlighted that the strong bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and China has significantly contributed to the country’s development and regional connectivity. He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s firm commitment to the one-China policy and expressed Sri Lanka’s readiness to further advance cooperation across key sectors such as trade, investment, infrastructure development, and maritime affairs.

Referring to the successful discussions between the leaders of the two countries, Minister Herath noted that Sri Lanka is keen to work closely with China to implement the shared vision outlined at the highest level. He emphasised the importance of accelerating ongoing collaborations under the Belt and Road Initiative, including the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port projects, which hold strategic value for Sri Lanka’s economic growth and regional engagement.

The two sides also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in emerging areas such as green energy, digital economy, agriculture, and the marine sector. Minister Herath welcomed China’s continued support and expressed confidence that the strategic cooperative partnership between Sri Lanka and China will continue to bring tangible benefits to both countries and their peoples.

The meeting concluded with both ministers affirming their shared vision for a strong, enduring partnership grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, and a commitment to peaceful regional development.
