The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved the establishment of seven new Consultancy Committees covering key industry sectors, expanding the existing framework aimed at addressing policy gaps in industrial and entrepreneurship development.
The move builds on the 20 Consultancy Boards already in operation across the production industries, which were set up to minimise policy-related issues and improve coordination between stakeholders.
The newly approved committees will cover the indigenous medicine and traditional or hereditary medical sector, confectionery-related production industries, traditional handicraft industries, chicken-related industries, ornamental fish and seaweed-related industries, creative craft industries, and the event management sector.
“Each committee will consist of no more than 25 members and will bring together expertise from State institutions, commercial boards and chambers, universities and research institutions, as well as professionals from the respective industry sectors,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.
He highlighted that there was a need to extend structured consultation mechanisms to industry segments that had so far remained outside the existing advisory framework.
“The initiative is expected to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, enhance industry participation in decision-making, and support the sustainable growth of these sectors by aligning Government policies more closely with industry needs and emerging market trends,” he added.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by the Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi.
