A secret ballot and election of ruling National People’s Power’s (NPP) Vraie Balthazaar as Colombo Mayor is likely today when the city’s Municipal Council meets today.

Analysts opined that given the secret ballot option exercised in some of the other Local Government (LG) councils, a similar strategy was likely today.

The likelihood of NPP candidate Balthazaar securing a Mayoral seat is despite the broader Opposition coming to an agreement last week to work together in upstaging NPP candidates.

At the time this edition went to print, efforts by the Opposition camp remained inconclusive.

At the LG elections, the NPP secured the highest number of seats in the Colombo Municipal Council, winning 48. However, the party did not obtain an overall majority.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) won 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) obtained 13 seats. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) secured five seats, and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) won foue seats. Independent Group 03 won three seats, while Independent Groups 04 and 05 secured two seats each.
