Sajith slams AKD’s parliamentary address

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday criticised President Anura Kumara Disanayake’s Parliament speech, claiming it lacked clarity and ignored the country’s real economic problems.

Speaking in Parliament, Premadasa said the President seemed more concerned with old political conspiracies from December than offering real solutions. “It sounded like someone having a bad dream — not the kind of speech you’d expect from a leader in a crisis,” he said.

Premadasa acknowledged the recent drop in US tariffs on Sri Lankan exports from 44% to 20% as a positive step. However, he criticised the Government for lacking any solid plan to grow exports or improve the economy.

Premadasa claimed the real “conspiracy” was the Government’s failure to deliver on its own promises.

He pointed out that poverty has worsened and asked whether the Government had any serious plan to turn things around. “There’s no strategy for boosting exports or attracting serious foreign investment,” he added.

Premadasa also responded to the President’s talk of possible political shifts in December, saying any changes should happen through elections, not secret deals.

He accused the Government of spreading false narratives and called on the President to pay attention to the real struggles of the public. “The President still talks like he’s in the Opposition. What the country needs is a clear economic plan,” Premadasa added.
