  • Says SJB will support Govt. to overcome economic problem if a genuine, transparent effort is made
  • Requests that an international aid conference be summoned
  • Says SJB is a responsible Opposition party
  • Reiterates President, PM must step down

SJB leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday requested the Government to summon an international aid conference in Sri Lanka and pledged its full support to make it a success.  “We are ready to support the Government to overcome this situation. Summon an international aid conference in this country. We will attend it and without any political motive support any transparent and genuine effort to gain aid that will go directly to the needy people of this country,” he said.

He said the SJB is ready to do this on behalf of the 22 million people of this country.

Premadasa said he had requested the European Union not to cancel the GSP plus’s facility to Sri Lanka and also encouraged the Indian Government to assist Sri Lanka.

“We are a responsible Opposition,” he said.

Premadasa said that the very MPs who applauded when tax cuts were awarded to the rich, are once again applauding for the Finance Minister’s announcement to increase taxes.

The Opposition Leader also said that the country’s economic problems were created by the policies of the President and the Prime Minister and they must resign.

“We must be given a chance to get a fresh mandate.  As long as the President and Prime Minister are in office there will only be darkness,” he said.
