Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says he will ensure all those involved in the Easter Sunday attack are brought before justice.

Addressing the Catholic community in Wennappuwa over the weekend Premadasa said he is not a politician that strikes deals and will therefore ensure all persons involved in the attack will be punished.

The Opposition leader said though former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2019 assured he would deliver justice to the attack’s victims and their families he did not deliver on the promise. He also reminded the crowds that he as the Minister of Cultural Affairs toiled hard to rebuild the shrines destroyed and damaged in the terrorist attack.

However, Premadasa noted that while one can rebuild buildings, precious lives lost cannot be restored. “Every leader promised to deliver justice but lied and tricked the people,” he said.

As a son who lost his father to terrorism, Premadasa pledged to initiate a foreign and local investigation into the attack and bring all those who were responsible for it to justice.

He also added that he believes laws and order must be strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future and that the death penalty must be imposed on those who take innocent lives through terrorism. He assured them he would deliver the justice that the victims, their families and all Sri Lankans desire.

Noting that often leaders strike deals to suppress similar issues, Premadasa said he does not strike deals with other politicians and merely has a deal with the people. The Opposition leader said his party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya does not have either unscrupulous political or financial deals with others.
