SC gives leave to process FR petition by woman in ‘Dharma Chakra’ dress

The Supreme Court yesterday granted leave to proceed in a Fundamental Rights petition to the woman arrested with a ship’s wheel on her clothes akin to the Dharma Chakra symbol.

The woman, Abdul Rahim Mazaina, a resident of Kolongoda, filed the petition at the Supreme Court, naming the OIC of the Hasalaka Police Station, the Acting IGP, and the Attorney General as Respondents.

In the petition, the women said she had been employed as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia before working as a dress-maker after returning to Sri Lanka.

The petitioner was arrested and later released on bail. In the petition she said the garment she was wearing had the print of a symbol of a ship’s wheel and not the Dharma Chakra as claimed by the police.

Arguments were fixed for 7 February 2020.
