Amid the global shipping crunch resultant energy and fertiliser shocks, the rupee weakened further against the US Dollar yesterday, with the Central Bank’s selling rate crossing the Rs. 331 mark for the first time since December 2023.

According to the latest exchange rate report issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka on 15 May, the US Dollar buying rate was recorded at Rs. 323.53, while the selling rate rose to Rs. 331.15.

This marks the first occasion since 5 December 2023 that the Dollar buying rate exceeded Rs. 323 and the selling rate moved beyond Rs. 331.

On 5 December 2023, the Central Bank recorded the Dollar buying rate at Rs. 323.00 and the selling rate at Rs. 333.20.

The latest depreciation extends the recent weakening trend in the Rupee amid continued volatility in global currency markets and external sector pressures.
