Colombo National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana yesterday said former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) until this morning as doctors continue to monitor his condition.
Wickremesinghe, who has been in remand custody since Friday over allegations of misusing Rs. 16.6 million in State funds for a private overseas visit, was scheduled to appear before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
Dr. Bellana said a panel of specialists had assessed Wickremesinghe’s condition as serious, leading to the decision to extend his stay in the ICU. He added that doctors are preparing a detailed medical report and that further evaluation will take place this morning.
According to Dr. Bellana, Wickremesinghe developed complications including dehydration, with possible effects on the heart, kidneys, and brain. He underwent an MRI scan yesterday afternoon, and medical staff are working to stabilise him. Doctors expect his condition may improve within the next two days.
Dr. Bellana also said only family members and individuals approved by the family are allowed to visit him in the ICU, while others may only approach the Unit’s entrance.
