Qatar Airways has sold its entire 9.7% stake in Cathay Pacific Airways for about $ 897 million (HK $ 6.97 billion), completing its exit from Hong Kong’s flagship carrier.

Cathay announced that it would repurchase the stake at HK $ 10.8374 per share, a roughly 4% discount to the previous day’s closing price.

The buyback represents a 35% premium on what Qatar Airways paid in 2017 when it acquired the holding from Kingboard Chemical Holdings.

Cathay said the transaction will be financed through internal funds and existing credit lines.

Cathay’s shares rose 4.8% yesterday, while Air China gained 4% and Swire Pacific advanced over 1%.

Qatar Airways’ investment in Cathay was its first major foothold in an Asian airline, aimed at expanding its global reach. The Gulf carrier, which has stakes in IAG, LATAM, and Virgin Australia, said the divestment was part of its disciplined portfolio strategy to optimise investments and position for long-term growth.

Cathay Chairman Patrick Healy said the buyback demonstrated strong confidence in the airline’s future. The company plans to invest HK $ 100 billion over seven years in fleet upgrades and new cabin products.
