Seven petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, challenging the constitutionality of the “Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) – A Bill to amend the Sri Lanka Electricity Act, No. 36 of 2024.”

This was published in Gazette dated 16/05/2025 and was placed on the Order Paper of the Parliament on 23/05/2025.

The petitioners include, Energy Analyst Vidhura Ralapanawe, Former Power and Renewable Energy State Minister and MP Ajith P. Perera, Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union, Frontline Socialist Party, Sri Lanka Green Alliance and a coalition of CEB Unions.

The petitioners allege that the proposed Amendments are in total or in part violate clauses of the Constitution and would require a 2/3 majority of the Parliament and a National Referendum to pass as law.

The cases are listed to be heard together on 11, 12, and 13 June 2025.
