The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday approved the procurement of 30,000 vials of 50 mg Liposomal Amphotericin B, a critical antifungal medication used to treat severe infections, particularly in patients with compromised immune systems.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Thursday, Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the decision follows a competitive international bidding process.

“Three bids were received in response to the call for international competitive procurement. Based on the evaluation and recommendations of the highest-level standing procurement committee, it was approved to award the contract to M/s Slim Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The medication will be supplied by the manufacturer, Gufic Bioscience Ltd. of India. The total cost of the procurement is Rs. 194.26 million,” he said.

Dr. Jayatissa said Amphotericin B is vital in the treatment of conditions such as cryptococcal meningitis and endemic leishmaniasis, diseases that pose a high risk to individuals with weakened immunity, including those with advanced HIV/AIDS or undergoing certain medical treatments.
