Presidential poll between 16 Sep. and 17 Oct. says EC

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) officially declared yesterday that the 2024 Presidential election will take place on a day between 17 September and 16 October.

Issuing a statement, ECSL Chairman R. M. A. L. Ratnayake accordingly announced plans to call for nominations for the upcoming Presidential election in compliance with the Constitution of Sri Lanka and the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981. 

The ECSL said as per the authority bestowed upon the Commission to designate the election date, it has been decided that the Presidential election will take place between 17 September 2024 and 16 October 2024.

Several politicians have indicated their intentions to contest in the upcoming elections, including the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, National People’s Power leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, SLPP MP Dhammika Perera, Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Mawbima Janatha Party leader Dilith Jayaweera, former Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara and former Public Utilities Commission Chairman Janaka Ratnayake among others.
