Presidential Secretariat reviews progress of 2026 Budget projects amid delays

A high-level review of the implementation of projects and policy initiatives under the 2026 Budget was held yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat, with officials assessing progress, implementation bottlenecks and measures required to accelerate delivery.

According to the President’s Office, the meeting was chaired by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and focused on the status of ministry-level projects as well as challenges affecting the execution of key Budget proposals.

The review covered projects being implemented by a broad range of ministries, including Defence; Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Digital Economy; Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism; Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation; Transport, Highways and Urban Development; Ports and Civil Aviation; Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government; Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development; Justice and National Integration; Women and Child Affairs; Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment; Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Youth Affairs and Sports; and Environment and Housing, Construction and Water Supply.

The President’s Office said particular attention was paid to implementation challenges and the actions required to overcome delays and improve project execution.

Addressing officials, Dr. Kumanayake stressed the importance of closer coordination among Government institutions to resolve outstanding issues and ensure that Budget-funded projects are delivered on schedule.

He also emphasised that expediting implementation and ensuring that the intended benefits reach the public remains a shared responsibility of all stakeholders involved in project execution.

The meeting forms part of the Government’s efforts to monitor the progress of initiatives announced under the 2026 Budget amid a broader focus on improving public sector efficiency and strengthening implementation capacity.
