President to attend 16th anniversary of end of conflict in North-East

President Anura Kumara Disanayake is scheduled to participate in the National War Heroes’ Day celebrations today at the National War Hero Cenotaph in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte in commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the war victory.

According to Ranaviru Seva Authority Chairman Brigadier (Retd.) Senarath Kohona, the ceremony will be held under the patronage of the President in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief.

A special traffic plan will be in place today around the Parliament area in Battaramulla due to the National War Heroes’ Day celebrations.

The commemoration event is scheduled to be held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Accordingly, Police have urged motorists to use alternate routes during this period.

Distinguished guests, including Defence Deputy Minister Major General (Retd.) Aruna Jayasekara, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet and former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, and Air Force Marshal Roshan Goonetileke, who led the tri-services in the final phase of the war, are expected to attend the event.

The 16-year conflict ended on 18 May 2009 with the death of Velupillai Prabhakaran – leader of the armed separatist group the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – by Sri Lankan security forces at the Nandikadal Lagoon.
