President prorogues Parliament until 7 February

President Ranil Wickremesinghe prorogued the fourth session of the ninth Parliament until 7 February via an Extraordinary Gazette yesterday.  

On 16 January the Parliamentary Affairs Committee led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced that the fourth session of the ninth Parliament will come to an end on 24 January. 

Before concluding the session, the Parliament took up the controversial Online Safety Bill which was passed on 24 January without a vote. 

The ceremonial opening of the new assembly term by President Ranil Wickramasinghe is set to take place at 10.30 a.m. on 7 February.  It is expected that Wickremesinghe will deliver a statement of Government policy at the commencement of the new Session.

The third session of the ninth Parliament concluded on 27 January 2023.
