President meets UN Secretary-General

President Anura Kumara Disanayake met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday at the UN Headquarters.

Issuing a statement, the President’s Media Division (PMD) noted the Secretary-General warmly received the President upon his arrival at the UN Headquarters, after which the two leaders held a cordial discussion.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), was marked by a cordial exchange of views. 

During the meeting, President Disanayake briefed the UN Secretary-General on the progress of Sri Lanka’s economic reforms and debt restructuring efforts, as well as key Government initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s economic, social and political development.

Secretary-General Guterres commended the progressive direction of the Sri Lankan Government and expressed the United Nations’ full support for the implementation of these initiatives.

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, former Chief Justice and President’s Counsel Jayantha Jayasuriya, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also participated in the meeting.
