President Anura Kumara Disanayake on Saturday confirmed that Sri Lanka has successfully negotiated a reduction in the proposed reciprocal tariff imposed by the US, bringing the rate down from 44% to 30%.

During a high-level meeting at the Presidential Secretariat with key stakeholders from the export sector, Disanayake noted that this development was the result of recent diplomatic efforts and ongoing dialogue with the US counterparts.

He stated that discussions will continue in the coming weeks in a bid to secure further concession that could ease the burden on Sri Lankan exporters.

The President stated that the objective of the Government is to implement changes that will benefit the country’s economy, business community, and the well-being of its citizens.

The meeting focused on the progress of discussions related to the new reciprocal tariff policy that the US is expected to implement, the current situation, and the economic challenges Sri Lanka may face in implementing this policy.

The exporters underscored the urgency of coordinated, proactive action.

At this critical juncture, the discussion also highlighted the importance of identifying new market opportunities and the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors. The diversification of exports was recognised as a key opportunity to navigate the current challenges.

The discussion was attended by Labour Minister and Economic Development Deputy Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Ministry Secretary K.A. Vimalenthirarajah, Senior Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs Duminda Hulangamuwa, Senior Adviser to the President on Digital Economy Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Sri Lanka Export Development Board Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe, Board of Investment Chairman Arjuna Herath, International Chamber of Commerce Chairman Shanil Fernando, Tea Exporters Association Chairman Huzefa Akbarally, and Brandix Group CEO Ashroff Omar, along with other representatives from institutions affiliated with the export sector.
