  • Accuses President of unleashing repression against people to protect the Rajapaksas
  • Says people’s tax monies being spent to maintain a hoard of ministers
  • Pledges to fight against repression together with Samagi Jana Sandhanaya

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of unleashing repression on the people in order to protect the Rajapaksa family.

Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will join the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya to fight against Government-sponsored repression.

The Opposition Leader also said that the Government has launched a cowardly attempt to suppress artists, students and the young generation of the country through the use of State brutality and State terrorism.

Premadasa made these comments while attending the launch of the joint statement titled ‘Let’s raise our voices for freedom’ organised by the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) against the anti-democratic repressive measures carried out by the current Government, including the use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. The event was held yesterday at the National Library and Documentation Services Board auditorium.

While slamming the Government’s move to appoint 37 State Ministers, Premadasa said the people’s tax monies are being spent to maintain the hoard of ministers. “While the people are crying, unable to beat the pressures, the SLPP Ministers and MPs who caused this devastation are rejoicing in their victory,” he said.

“The people rose against their oppression and wished for a fair and just country. But today the Government is dedicated to protecting the Rajapaksa dynasty instead,” he noted.
