Sri Lanka Police have commenced a special operation in the Southern Province targeting foreign nationals driving without valid licences.

The move follows a directive issued earlier this week stating that it is an offence to provide a motor vehicle, three-wheeler or motorcycle to a foreign national who does not hold a valid driving licence, whether on a rental, lease or any other arrangement.

Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said legal action would be instituted against business operators and vehicle owners found to be in breach of the Motor Traffic Act.

Police said the measure is intended to enhance safety for foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka.

According to Police data, five foreign nationals were killed in road accidents in 2025 while driving in the country. In addition, seven serious accidents involving foreign drivers have been recorded this year.

Authorities also reported 78 minor accidents and six incidents involving vehicle damage.

Police said violations of traffic regulations by both drivers and vehicle owners had contributed to the accidents and stressed that enforcement would be stepped up.
