The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday gave its green light to modernise the public transportation system with the introduction of 100 new fleet of high-tech, low-entry, comfortable buses.
The initiative proposed in the 2025 Budget, involves the establishment of a dedicated subsidiary company under the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB). It will be incorporated under the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007 and will be responsible for the implementation and management of the project.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the initiative seeks to enhance the quality and efficiency of passenger transport through a pilot project deploying a new fleet of buses along key urban areas.
“The buses will operate along several major road corridors including; Colombo, Makumbura (Kottawa), Kaduwela, Kadawatha and Moratuwa offering commuters a more reliable, accessible and convenient travel experience,” he added.
Dr. Jayatissa said the aim is to encourage greater use of public transport by providing an alternative to private vehicle use.
