Petitions against 22nd Amendment rise to nine

The number of petitions challenging the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution has risen to nine, with two more petitions filed against the Bill, Parliament was informed yesterday.

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne told Parliament that he had received copies of two additional petitions filed against the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill.

The latest petitions follow seven challenges previously notified to Parliament over two days.

The Speaker said copies of three petitions were received on 19 August, followed by another four on 20 August.

The 22nd Amendment Bill seeks to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 years and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65 years, widely opposed by the legal sector led by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) as an infringement judicial independence.
