  • Says SL committed to expanding cooperation through Belt and Road Initiative

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in Beijing for the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, yesterday met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People.

Talks between the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, advancing development projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, and expanding collaboration across key economic and social sectors.

President Xi highlighted the longstanding friendship between China and Sri Lanka, noting that relations between the two countries have grown steadily based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. He described the partnership as a model of mutual respect and cooperation, adding that China continues to regard Sri Lanka as an important partner in its regional diplomacy.

Xi said China is committed to working with Sri Lanka to strengthen traditional ties, promote shared development, and improve the welfare of both nations. He also stressed the importance of deeper collaboration in areas such as law enforcement, combating cybercrime, and engagement under international frameworks, including the United Nations.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to the One China policy and expressed appreciation for China’s continued support toward the island’s economic and social development. She said Sri Lanka hopes to draw lessons from China’s modernisation experience and expand cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Prime Minister also commended the four global initiatives introduced by President Xi at the leaders’ meeting, describing them as timely responses to global challenges. She said Sri Lanka looks forward to working with China to implement these initiatives and advance shared progress for developing nations.
