Immigration and Emigration Department Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya said the introduction of new visa procedures and the rollout of an online visa issuance system are set to attract a broader range of visitors, strengthening the country’s standing as a premier tourist destination in the region.

“One of the key objectives behind the implementation of the new visa system is to attract new visitors to Sri Lanka, whilst also ensuring a seamless experience for repeat visitors,” he said during a media briefing.

To achieve this, he said several tourist visa categories ranging from six months to 10 years have been introduced, catering to the diverse preferences and needs of travellers.

He highlighted the advantages of the new online visa system, noting its capability to accommodate multiple entry visa applications for long-term stays.

“Previously, we only had the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) methodology available online. However, with the introduction of the new system, we have made all types of visa applications accessible online. The new features are expected to provide greater flexibility and convenience for tourists,” Ilukpitiya said.

The Controller General also said it has taken measures to streamline the payment process, with all payment methods and transactions now managed under its purview.

“The centralised approach aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in visa processing, providing tourists with a hassle-free experience from application to approval,” he said.
