New Malé airport terminal sets stage for more tourists, economic growth

In a historic moment for the Maldives, the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) was officially opened on 26 July.

This event coincided with the country’s 60th anniversary of independence, marking both a cultural milestone and a transformative leap forward in the nation’s tourism and aviation infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony, graced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, was attended by over 6,000 invitees and was complemented by spectacular celebrations, including a drone and light show, as well as a grand fireworks display.

The new terminal spans a massive 72,000 square metres, designed to cater to an impressive 7.5 million passengers annually. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be a game-changer for the Maldives, enhancing the overall travel experience with world-class amenities and cutting-edge technology.

The opening of this terminal signals the Maldives’ determination to further develop its tourism sector, attract new visitors, and diversify its offerings to cater to a wider range of travellers.
