The arrival of Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe from Australia is awaited for the formal appointment of him as the new

Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe

Governor of the Central Bank.

Sources said that Nandalal was in Australia on a personal visit and had accepted an invitation from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to take up the crucial post as the Governor of the CBSL.

“Upon his arrival Nandalal will be appointed as the new CBSL Governor,” sources told the

Daily FT.

The move follows the resignation of veteran Nivard Cabraal as the CBSL Governor on Monday in his second stint.

Nandalal, a highly respected career central banker and the Senior Deputy Governor of CBSL, was side-lined after the Gotabaya Rajapaksa regime took office. He took an early retirement in October 2020.

Other possible candidates speculated for the CBSL Governorship included former Deputy Governor W.A. Wijewardena, senior central banker and current Monetary Board member Dr. Ranee Jayamaha, and Institute of Policy Studies Executive Director Dr. Dushni Weerakoon.
