National System Operator (NSO) Chairman Dr. Pradeep Perera has told the Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) that payments due to independent power producers (IPPs) would be settled once expected funding is received.
Responding to questions from CoPF Chairman Dr. Harsha de Silva on outstanding dues, Dr. Perera said arrears to renewable energy producers had already been reduced.
He told the Committee that approximately Rs. 3 billion had been paid to renewable energy suppliers during May, reducing outstanding arrears from around Rs. 10 billion.
Dr. Perera said further payments would be made after the receipt of expected funds, while noting that the NSO also had obligations to other creditors. However, he did not provide a timeline for the settlement of the remaining dues.
Dr. de Silva stressed that suppliers should be paid for electricity already purchased by the system operator.
In May, IPPs said they had not received payments since December 2025, with outstanding dues estimated at Rs. 10 billion and an additional Rs. 2.5 billion becoming due every month, placing nearly 400 renewable energy companies, many of them small and medium-scale local enterprises, under severe financial stress (see: https://www.ft.lk/top-story/Renewable-energy-producers-hit-by-Rs-10-b-unpaid-dues/26-791649).
