NPP not ready to abolish Executive Presidency yet

Cabinet Spokesperson and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday the NPP Government is not prepared to move on abolishing the Executive Presidency at this stage.

He noted that while the pledge to scrap the post was a key election promise endorsed at both the Presidential and Parliamentary polls, the Government has so far focused on reviving the economy and laying the groundwork for equitable growth.

According to him, constitutional reforms of this scale require time and preparation, and the process to abolish the Executive Presidency would begin once the economy is firmly on a growth trajectory.

“We’ve been in office for less than a year, give us more time and we will fulfil the mandate of the people,” Dr. Jayatissa said.
