NMSJ says ignoring Auditor General’s recommendations enables corruption

The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) has expressed its deep concern that relevant institutions have failed to implement recommendations in relation to 95% of the over 2,500 reports issued by the Auditor General’s Department in the past.

“This failure only furthers the culture of corruption and waste in the country. Therefore, we, as the NMSJ, urge those responsible to address this matter without delay,” it said in a statement.

The NMSJ said the fight against corruption and fraud is a key topic of public and political debate. In response, several laws, including the Anti-Corruption Act, have been reformed. However, the Government itself acknowledges that these measures alone are insufficient given the challenges facing our country. Addressing these issues is critical for the nation’s future and the integrity of the public sector. In this context, any form of neglect is unacceptable.

Despite financial and human resource constraints, the Auditor General’s Department continues to provide a vital service. Other sectors must take full responsibility and actively contribute to the fight against corruption and waste. This should be considered a national duty, it said.

We once again emphasise the need for special attention to this matter and believe the Government must take steps to strengthen the Auditor General’s Department by providing the necessary resources to enhance its role,” the NMSJ statement said.
