Meta Platforms and Microsoft are cutting thousands of jobs as both companies ramp up investments in artificial intelligence, with executives citing improved productivity from the technology.

Meta said it will reduce its workforce by around 10%, affecting just under 8,000 employees, as part of a restructuring plan aimed at boosting efficiency. The company also plans to close approximately 6,000 open roles.

Microsoft, in a separate announcement, said it would offer voluntary retirement packages to about 7% of its US workforce, equivalent to roughly 8,750 employees, marking the first such initiative of its kind at the company.

The moves reflect a broader shift among large technology firms towards leaner operations, as AI-driven tools begin to reshape productivity and workforce requirements.
