Melwa Hotels & Resorts signs BOI deal for $ 52m expansion of Hilton DoubleTree, Negombo

The Board of Investment (BOI) said yesterday it recently entered into a $ 52 m agreement with Melwa Hotels and Resorts Ltd. to expand room capacity at Hilton DoubleTree Hotel, in Negombo. 

As a result of this investment, among other expansion activities planned, 57 new rooms will be constructed to augment capacity to reach a total of 141.  

BOI Chairman Sanjaya Mohottala said: “We commend this initiative by Melwa Hotels and Resorts to expand its property, as the tourism sector re-opens to international visitors and welcome this great new addition to the Sri Lankan Tourism portfolio. 

This infrastructure development combined with DoubleTree by Hilton’s expertise in managing a hospitality chain of over 580 hotels and resorts across the globe, will further add value to the Sri Lanka tourism and hospitality sector – a welcoming boost to tourism and in accelerating room capacity for the country.”  

Hilton DoubleTree Negombo is designed by a renowned architectural firm, Design Consortium International, along with Hilton Worldwide’s technical, architectural, technological and operational inputs, to conform to its international standards. This star hotel will consist of 141 rooms inclusive of superior, deluxe and suite rooms. All rooms and suites, adhering to Hilton Worldwide brand standards overlooking the Negombo beach, are interior designed by SODA Interiors in Thailand and hospitality food and beverage designed by CKP International in Malaysia. 

Melwa Hotel and Resorts, a fully-owned subsidiary of Melwire Rolling, a leader in the steel market in Sri Lanka, diversified into the local hospitality industry, in partnership with the Hilton brand. The main development will consist of star-class luxury hotels and resorts with approximately 750 rooms across the country, strategically located in Katunayake, Kandy, Kosgoda, Negombo, Nuwara Eliya and Yala.
